HOW WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY WORKS FOR OVERALL HEALTH?
Generally, obese patients have other comorbidities related to their overweight which gradually improves after weight-loss surgery. These include:
⦁ Obstructive sleep apnea: This is very commonly seen among obese patients or those with a heavy neck in which there is the abnormal pattern of breathing due to airway blockage (because of fat accumulation) and patient snores loudly when he/she is in deep sleep. After bariatric surgery as soon as they lose their fat, airway got space to breathe properly and get rid of this problem of sleep apnea and snoring.
⦁Type 2 diabetes: patients who are having type-2 diabetes before surgery and using Insulin may no longer continue with the Insulin after weight-loss surgery( Mini Gastric Bypass). It is not cured with the surgery but it can be controlled.
⦁ High cholesterol: Obese patients usually have the problem of high cholesterol which is actually due to excessive fat. Thus, after the bariatric surgery as they are losing their fat their cholesterol levels become normal in range.
⦁ Joint pain, knee problems or other orthopedic problems: People with excessive weight may have orthopedic ailments especially in advanced age such as knee pain, joint pain, difficulty in walking etc. So, as they lose their weight their orthopedic problems improves.
⦁ High blood pressure: This can be seen in every third person having a problem of high blood pressure. This is due to high cholesterol levels, sedentary lifestyle, no activity which raises the blood pressure but after bariatric surgery this also improves with time.
⦁ Asthma: Obese patients are suffering from asthma , breathlessness but this also get improves after weight loss surgery as they lose their weight, they are able to do their daily living activities without any exertion. Even they can climb upstairs up to 5th floor .
